Ken Turner is returning as Athletic Director after serving in the same role for 2015-16 school year.  Turner has over 35 years of experience coaching in Los Angeles.  He began as a Junior High basketball coach at Horace Mann in the late 80’s.  He then became an assistant coach at Dorsey High School where he helped lead the team to two LA City Championship appearances in 1993 and 1994.  Turner then shifted to girls basketball and became the Head Coach of the girls basketball program at Dorsey where he led the team to its first ever LA City 3A Championship in 1996, being named LA City 3A Coach of the Year.  After two more seasons at Dorsey, Turner became the second Head Coach of the West LA College women’s basketball program.  In his first season, Turner led the West LA program to its first ever Western State Conference Championship with a record of 23-5 after winning only one game the season before.  This was the biggest one-season turnaround in the nation that season resulting in another Coach of the Year honor for Turner.  After three seasons at West LA and earning a ranking as high as #2 in the state, Turner left to become the Head Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at CSUN.  While at CSUN, Turner led the Lady Matadors to their first ever Big West win.  Following his first season at CSUN, Turner joined the staff as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Sparks.

 

After leaving the Sparks, Turner went back to assist at West LA College before being named Head Coach at San Pedro High School where he coached one year before being hired as assistant coach at his alma mater, Cal State L.A.  In his second year as assistant at Cal State L.A., Turner helped lead the team to its first ever NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance.  In 2007, Turner began teaching at Hamilton High School.  At Hamilton Turner has held such positions as Special Education Teacher, Intervention Coordinator, Restorative Justice Teacher-Advisor, Athletic Director, and he has also led the Black Student Union for the past 15 years. 

Ken Turner is a graduate of Cleveland High School in Reseda, CA.  He has also earned a B.A. in Sociology and a M.A. in Communications Studies from Cal State L.A.  He is the father of two adult children, Kenya and Isaiah, who both graduated from Hamilton High School.
